Life and death of the vessels. The production of the Andean subject and archaeodesign in the Bolivian highlands

Abstract
This paper examines how non-modern perspectives on the creation and design of objects/subjects can inform archaeological practices, which can also be seen as acts of design. It summarizes the archaeological use of ceramics, particularly in the context of the Middle Horizon (ca. 500-1100 AD) and the Late Intermediate Period (ca. 1100-1450 AD) in the Bolivian highlands, highlighting the prevalence of an ontological model that treats both potsherds and complete ceramics as equivalent. The paper then explores the production of objects in the Andean region, where ceramics are viewed as subjects, attributing a different significance and power to their fragments. Finally, it reviews the contexts and manifestations of ceramics during the specified periods, positing that Andean perspectives on the life and death of vessels can provide valuable insights for the design of archaeological objects.
