Abstract

Objective: To describe the research on beliefs about suicidal behavior published between 2012-2022. Methods: Systematic review according to PRISMA methodology. The following databases were used: SciELO, SCOPUS, Web of Science and PubMed; through an advanced search with the equation "Beliefs AND (suicide OR Suicide attempt)" and the years 2012-2022. Endnote x9 was used and the selection criteria were: 1. original articles, 2. that address beliefs about suicidal behavior. The information was processed in Atlas.ti 9. Results: The selected documents were 11. Quantitative approaches predominate, with ad hoc questionnaires and with a variety of criteria on the operationalization of the suicidal behavior beliefs variable. It is noted that there is an association between beliefs about suicidal behavior and said behaviors, mediated by sociodemographic variables such as age, sex, educational level and religious beliefs. The limitation of the study was in selecting only one type of article. A meta-analysis could not be performed due to the methodological diversity of the studies reviewed. Discussion: Beliefs about suicidal behavior are a variable applied in studies with a predominance of descriptive approaches, which requires new theoretical and methodological considerations for its further study and application in the prevention of this health problem.
