Guide to ethics and good practices
The Editorial Committee, the Scientific Committee, and the Editor of the journal Duazary, aware of the importance of maintaining high ethical standards and the responsibility inherent in scientific publishing, include in the editorial process the necessary actions to prevent misconduct, fraud, and plagiarism in the content. Based on the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, plagiarism “is an act of fraud that consists of passing off another person’s ideas or words as one’s own or presenting as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source without due acknowledgment,” that is, copying someone else’s text without citing the source. In this regard, the following is a guidance document for authors on these issues.
Editorial Policy
Authors interested in publishing in Duazary must register in the Open Journal System (http://revistas.unimagdalena.edu.co/index.php/duazary/user/register) and submit their manuscript through this platform. The corresponding author may request and send information via email: revistaduazary@unimagdalena.edu.co. Likewise, Duazary will subject all articles it receives to an originality review using Turnitin software. If complete overlap of the submitted manuscript with another text is detected, without proper citations, the manuscript will be immediately rejected and the corresponding author will be notified of the reason for rejection, as recommended by COPE (http://publicationethics.org/files/Spanish%20%281%29.pdf). In cases of partial similarity, the corresponding author will be notified to make the necessary adjustments (inclusion of citations, paraphrasing, etc.) to continue with the editorial process.
Articles by Duazary Committee Members
The Editor, the Editorial Committee, the Scientific Committee, or any other person directly linked to the journal must refrain from publishing documents requiring scientific peer review, in order to avoid undermining the anonymity principle of the review process. By exception, they may only participate as authors of editorials.
Article Evaluation and Editorial Process
Each article submitted to Duazary is considered a confidential document. For this reason, the evaluation process for reviewers and authors is anonymous (double-blind), meaning that reviewers and authors remain unknown to each other.
Author Responsibilities
Responsibility for the content of articles will always rest with the authors and under no circumstances with the Editor, the Editorial Committee, the Scientific Committee, or the Universidad del Magdalena.
Authors must declare their independence from supporting or funding institutions and affirm that the design, conduct of the work, and manuscript preparation were free from biases induced by interests or scientific values other than those of the research. Only articles in which the authors declare no conflict of interest will be considered. In some cases, authors will be required to specify the support received (financial, equipment, staff, etc.) from individuals or public or private institutions for conducting the study, as well as any personal or institutional relationships that may influence the conduct, results, interpretation, or writing of the article. Funding institutions must be indicated exclusively in the acknowledgments section.
When citing another’s work or reproducing a figure or table from a book or journal article, the author must cite it according to Duazary’s standards. Authors are responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions for reproducing texts, figures, tables, photographs, or other previously published illustrations.
Material taken from letters, manuscripts, and unpublished interviews will be rejected as references unless prior permission is obtained from the author—that is, a signed document authorizing publication of the material in print, digital, or any other dissemination medium, ensuring that it will only be used for academic purposes. The author must always provide appropriate acknowledgment of any supplied material.
The inclusion or removal of authors after submission of the manuscript to Duazary is strictly prohibited. In exceptional cases, after review by the Editorial Committee, an author or authors may be added or removed. In such cases, a signed statement from the other authors of the article must be obtained. The specific contribution of each person to the research must be detailed. Individuals who made significant contributions to the article but do not meet authorship criteria may be acknowledged without titles or acronyms.
If an error is detected in any article data that could affect the content of a publication, the author(s) are obligated to notify the journal so it can modify, withdraw, or publish an erratum. If such an error is discovered by a member of Duazary, the author(s) will be notified and must prove the correctness of the work.
Unjustified fragmentation of manuscripts must be avoided. In the case of very extensive studies or research, the work may be published in several parts, provided each part develops a specific aspect of the original study. Authors must ensure that all related papers are published in the same journal, if it accepts such fragmentations, to facilitate readers’ overall interpretation of the study.
Declaration on the Use of Artificial Intelligence
Duazary recognizes the growing relevance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in research and scientific communication. However, their use raises ethical and transparency considerations that must be addressed to ensure academic integrity. AI tools will never be recognized as authors of any manuscript. Authorship requires legal and ethical responsibility, which is impossible for AI.
Any use of AI in writing, data analysis, image production, or any other stage of the manuscript must be explicitly declared. Authors must specify which tool was used, for what purpose, and the scope of its contribution. Nevertheless, authors remain responsible for the validity, accuracy, and originality of the content.
During the editorial and review process, uploading manuscripts to AI systems (such as ChatGPT or others) is prohibited, as this may compromise confidentiality, copyright, and data privacy.
The use of AI must align with the principles of integrity, fairness, and transparency. Authors are responsible for ensuring that generated material does not violate copyright, commit plagiarism, or reproduce discriminatory biases.
Since the use of AI is a constantly evolving field, Duazary is committed to periodically reviewing and updating these guidelines in accordance with international recommendations from COPE and ICMJE.
Starting in 2026, all manuscripts submitted for publication in Duazary must include an explicit declaration of AI use (or non-use).
-
This declaration will be mandatory.
-
It must appear as a separate section before the references.
-
Authors must indicate whether they used AI tools, specify the tool’s name and version, the purpose of use, and confirm that they take full responsibility for the generated content.
-
If no AI tools were used, the following statement must be included: “The authors declare that no Artificial Intelligence tools were used at any stage in the preparation of this manuscript.”
This requirement is based on the transparency and ethical responsibility guidelines established by COPE and ICMJE.
Editorial Responsibilities
At Duazary, the Editor and Editorial Committee are responsible for selecting the articles to be published. The criteria for this selection are based on the characteristics of the articles, such as quality, relevance, originality, novelty, and contributions to the knowledge in the areas addressed by Duazary. The Editor and Editorial Committee will also take into account the diversity and plurality of Duazary’s contents. If an article is rejected, the author will receive justification based on these aspects.
The Duazary editorial team is responsible for style review, layout, and publication of all articles that successfully complete the editorial process. It also manages the dissemination and distribution of each published issue.
Reviewer Responsibilities / Peer Review
The first stage in the review of an article submitted to Duazary is a formal review by the editorial team. This stage includes checking the originality of the manuscript with the help of Turnitin software. The article is then sent for evaluation by at least two external peer reviewers (national or international), who will assess aspects such as originality, depth, and theoretical contributions.
Confidentiality of Manuscripts in the Review Process
Any manuscript under review must be considered highly confidential at all stages of the editorial process until publication. It is strictly prohibited to disseminate or share any part or fragment of the manuscript under review. Exceptions exist only when additional expert assistance is sought to strengthen the review process, and only with prior authorization from the handling editor.
Editing Rules
A maximum of one direct quotation, fewer than six lines, is allowed per article. Authors must ensure that the results presented in figures, tables, or texts are original, undistorted, and not fabricated. Plagiarism in all its forms is considered scientific misconduct.
Declaration of Ethical Aspects
Immediately after the Materials and Methods section, the procedures followed in the study must be described to ensure compliance with the principles and ethical standards of the Declaration of Helsinki (1975 and its later revisions) and Resolution 8430 of 1993 of the Colombian Ministry of Health. In all cases, it must be indicated how the rights of participants were protected and whether consent or authorization was obtained; this documentation must be submitted at the time of manuscript submission.
Patient names, initials, or hospital numbers must be omitted, especially in illustrative material such as images or any other element that could reveal the patient’s identity. When animals are used in experiments, it must be stated whether the guidelines of the originating institution, a national research committee, or any other appropriate entity were followed. National regulations regarding the handling and use of laboratory animals must also be considered.
