Resumen

El periodo de gestación materna supone un estado de alta susceptibilidad ante agentes internos y externos que son una amenaza para el desarrollo fetal a corto y largo plazo. La toxoplasmosis congénita (TC) es una infección parasitaria transmitida de la madre al feto durante el embarazo, causada por el protozoo Toxoplasma gondii. Esta enfermedad representa un importante problema de salud pública debido a sus potenciales consecuencias graves para el desarrollo fetal y neonatal. A lo largo de los años, la investigación en torno a la TC ha avanzado significativamente y permitido una mejor comprensión de su epidemiología, mecanismos de transmisión, diagnóstico y opciones terapéuticas. Esta revisión tiene como objetivo sintetizar el conocimiento actual sobre la TC y abordar aspectos clave como la biología del Toxoplasma gondii, las rutas de transmisión materno-fetal, manifestaciones clínicas, técnicas diagnósticas disponibles y los enfoques terapéuticos.
